Modern healthcare systems are undergoing a radical transformation as digital infrastructure bridges the gap between urban specialists and rural patients. Through virtual consultations and digital triage, providers are overcoming geographical barriers, ensuring that high-quality medical expertise is no longer restricted by physical location. This evolution in care delivery prioritizes accessibility and efficiency, reshaping the patient experience across the globe.

Clinical environments are undergoing a significant transformation as the shift from centralized laboratory testing to immediate bedside diagnostics gains momentum. By bringing sophisticated analysis directly to the patient, healthcare providers can drastically reduce wait times for critical results, enabling faster intervention and more personalized care pathways. This evolution not only optimizes hospital workflows but also improves outcomes in emergency and remote settings where time is of the essence.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), has selected HPE to upgrade the state’s Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS).
As part of the $215 million dollar contract, HPE will establish the Kansas Modular Medicaid System (KMMS) – a new high-tech foundation to assist the administration of Medicaid. Adopting a variety of HPE technologies, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, and superior partner solutions from Cerner and SAS, HPE will strengthen the state’s ability to manage Medicaid policies and finances across disparate programs and agencies.
Medicaid – one of the largest healthcare payers in the United States – is undergoing a dramatic transformation due to federal mandate. The Department of Health and Human Services has issued new standards and conditions for Medicaid technology systems that must be met which include the use of a modular, flexible approach to systems development. Failure to meet the new criteria can result in the loss of federal funding for technological investments and improvement.
To comply with the new government criteria, HPE has designed KMMS to support modularity and a multi-vendor model that can operate seamlessly in traditional and hybrid IT environments. As a result, KDHE has future flexibility to add or swap modules without replacing the underlying infrastructure that powers the state’s Medicaid systems. This flexibility enables KDHE to more cost-effectively upgrade individual modules as business needs change without the added risk, expense, or potential disruption to reprocure the entire system.
“With KMMS, Kansas will have a new information technology foundation for our Medicaid enterprise that will allow us to communicate targeted, actionable information from more sources in near real time to decision-makers,” said Dr. Susan Mosier, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (@KDHE).  “This foundation will support changes over time to meet future program needs.  By selecting HPE, we have partnered with an innovative company that understands the unique technological challenges of Medicaid delivery.”
The Kansas Modular Medicaid System is a major IT milestone for the state and is comprised of a variety of HPE technologies and services and key industry solutions. HPE will leverage HealtheIntentSM, Cerner’s system-agnostic, near real-time population health management platform designed to aggregate data from multiple sources into a single patient record. In addition, Cerner’s enterprise data warehouse solution, HealtheEDWSM will be deployed to provide insights and intelligence based on claims analysis, clinical and financial information across the state’s more than 400,000 Medicaid beneficiaries. These systems will enable Kansas to manage patient care and health outcomes to an optimal level.
“Historically, states collected analysis based on retroactive claims data,” said Zane Burke, president of Cerner (@Cerner). “Working with HPE, Kansas’ Medicaid program will be able to produce intelligence based on claims plus clinical and financial information in near-real time that allows Kansas to improve and futureproof its ability to exchange data across disparate agency systems. This is an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to the improvement of health care delivery and the health of communities on a state-wide scale.”
“Agencies that process and dispense Medicaid services are under enormous pressure to get the job done,” said Susan Arthur, Vice President & General Manager, Health & Life Sciences Industry and Canadian Public Sector, HPE Enterprise Services. “As the largest provider of Medicaid process management services touching more than 24.5 million lives, HPE brings to bear the knowledge and expertise to exceed KDHE’s goals that will ultimately improve the healthcare quality of Kansans across the state.”
