Advancing GenAI Capabilities and Bringing Interoperability Solutions to Researchers and Patients

49

The InterSystems community recently gathered for our annual Global Summit and four days of thought-provoking discussions on the issues and considerations that are top-of-mind around the technologies and policies transforming the healthcare industry. From keynotes to interactive panels and developer sessions, we heard from industry leaders in artificial intelligence, healthcare operations and interoperability.

Artificial intelligence has transformative potential for driving value and insights from data, our core business. InterSystems is actively working with providers and clinicians to incorporate feedback in the product development process as we integrate generative AI safely and responsibly, based on 46 years of expertise in the healthcare industry.

We showcased new capabilities for our TrakCare and HealthShare solutions at Global Summit that illuminate AI’s purpose as an advisor, an assistant, and an enabler. We also introduced two innovative solutions that drive value from data for improving interoperability and scalability of clinical research and transforming the patient and provider experience.

Advancing generative AI in healthcare through AI-enabled tools

We showcased several different AI-driven capabilities that we plan to make available in products by the end of 2024. These include:

  • Enhancing clinician productivity and generating clinical documentation and actions using ambient listening technology. We previewed an AI-enabled ambient assistant to the TrakCare platform that will combine ambient listening technology with generative AI to allow clinicians to focus on patients and care delivery over administrative tasks. In addition to serving as a medical scribe, the ambient assistant will produce discrete actions based on the conversation such as imaging, prescriptions and lab orders for the clinician to easily confirm and order follow-on treatments so patients receive care as quickly as possible.
  • Improving the clinical user experience and accelerating patient diagnoses with an integrated AI-based co-pilot:  Another new capability we were excited to preview at Global Summit this year is an AI co-pilot for HealthShare Unified Care Record, designed to reimagine how clinicians interact with longitudinal health records. Patients with complex clinical histories can have records with thousands of pages (we have customers with charts that are over 7,000 pages long!). Using generative AI, our new co-pilot will provide clinicians with a chat-based experience for locating information within a patient’s medical history. It will allow them to ask questions like “Which risk factors does this patient have?” or “Have they been seen for this condition before?” or “Summarise any relevant cardiac history for this patient.” The co-pilot will produce answers within seconds using the entire individual’s medical history as the data set, to find answers even if buried deep within the clinical notes.
  • Creating a personalised dashboard in HealthShare Clinical Viewer: Another capability we showcased is HealthShare Co-Creator, an AI-powered customisable dashboard for HealthShare Clinical Viewer, which delivers a longitudinal representation of the patient and member record. Through this capability, users can mix and match pre-engineered prompts to configure and personalise a clinician’s view of a patient record. This innovative feature empowers users to configure and personalise the clinician’s view of patient records. By mixing and matching pre-engineered prompts, healthcare providers can create a tailored view that suits their specific needs and preferences, leading to a more user-friendly experience.

We are currently testing these capabilities with three healthcare provider customers.

Streamlining clinical research with the InterSystems OMOP Platform Solution
Building on its initial work with Parc Taulí University Hospital and Baystate Health to convert their data to the OMOP format, InterSystems is announcing an early access program for the OMOP Platform Solution, a cloud-based research solution that improves interoperability and scalability for clinical research and patient data management. The OMOP Platform Solution, built on InterSystems IRIS CloudSQL, automates data extraction, transformation and loading from bulk FHIR data sources into target OMOP repositories, enabling organisations to quickly create and refresh research data repositories, maintain multiple instances, and support a cloud-based research environment.

Enhancing Interoperability in Two Key Areas of Healthcare

The Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) is the most widely used data model for representing diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, patient demographics and other patient data for clinical research, with 3,758 collaborators in 83 countries. This allows data from different sources (forms, electronic health records, claims databases, etc.) to be combined and analysed effectively. By using the same data format, researchers and healthcare organisations can access data distributed across systems for faster collaboration, sharing of information, and conducting large-scale studies. By lowering technical barriers and the expertise traditionally required to leverage OMOP data, organisations can take full advantage of open-source data models and research analytics tools to drive collaboration.

The InterSystems OMOP Platform Solution will be available in an early access program later this year.

Solving interoperability challenges with Health Gateway Service
In modern healthcare, personalised care decisions often involve input from clinicians and specialists practicing in different organisations and geographies. However, incomplete medical data resulting from lack of interoperability means that a patient’s complete medical history may not follow them to every care visit. To solve this interoperability challenge, InterSystems Health Gateway Service, available in Q3, will deliver near real-time, secure access to patient data from national information sharing networks. Offering a single comprehensive view of a patient’s medical history, regardless of where care was received, it will gather patient data from across national networks, like Care Quality, eHealth Exchange and CommonWell in the U.S., and make it available in chart format within clinician workflows.

InterSystems Global Summit 2024 is the premier gathering for the InterSystems technology community where industry leaders, C-level executives, subject matter experts, and developers share insights and engage with the latest advancements across healthcare, data management, supply chain and finance.

We will also be discussing how to benefit from digital innovations including AI at the InterSystems Asia Healthcare Summit on 21-22 August in Jakarta.
